Has the 'Big Quit' reached France? Employers struggle to hire staff

Since the Covid-19 pandemic, more and more employees have been quitting their jobs. Businesses are also realising that a pay cheque isn't all their staff are looking for. So has the so-called Great Resignation or Big Quit reached France? We look at some of the numbers behind the phenomenon.

While the lack of workers is hitting several sectors in France, industries with difficult hours and relatively low pay are the hardest hit. The hospitality sector has been hemorrhaging staff: a quarter of a million jobs are available in bars, cafes and restaurants. It's a massive headache for business owners of the world's number one tourist destination, especially ahead of the busy summer season.

The current situation is somewhat changing the power dynamic between employers and employees, with the former sometimes going above and beyond to attract the latter. We take a look at some original and innovative ways businesses and sometimes even the state have come up with to find workers to join their teams.

Finally, to analyse the state of the workforce in France, we speak to Professor Christine Erhel, Chair of Labour Economics at the French National Conservatory of Arts and Crafts.
