Harry Maguire's form is being questioned by his Man United teammates

Harry Maguire's future at Manchester United will come under even greater scrutiny in the summer with the club planning to sign a world-class centre-back.

More doubts emerged over Maguire’s form and captaincy on Thursday amid claims that his United teammates are questioning why he continues to be picked by interim manager Ralf Rangnick.

Maguire was rested for last weekend’s goalless draw with Watford - when Raphael Varane played alongside Victor Lindelof in central defence - and it remains to be seen if he is reinstated for Sunday’s Manchester derby at the Etihad.

Rangnick has been publicly supportive of Maguire, but it’s understood that a new centre-back will be high on United’s list of targets in the summer.

Antonio Rudiger could be an option if the Germany international doesn’t agree a new contract at Chelsea, while Barcelona’s young Uruguayan defender Ronald Araujo is among the other names being linked with a move to Old Trafford.

United’s plans to strengthen in central defence - Eric Bailly and Phil Jones also face uncertain futures at the club - are bound to cast further doubt over Maguire’s situation.

It is complicated by the fact that he is United’s captain and the most expensive centre-back in world football following a £80million move from Leicester in 2019.

But the England international’s form has dipped alarmingly this season and even Rangnick admitted recently that Maguire has suffered some ‘weaker moments’.
