Harry Maguire praised by Manchester United fans as Ronaldo and Fernandes book World Cup place

Harry Maguire doesn’t need any reminding of the sort of season he’s having at United, although that didn’t stop the Wembley crowd on Tuesday night. The defender came in for some booing as England faced Ivory Coast in their latest friendly ahead of the World Cup at the end of the year.

Not only did the United captain receive some flak when his name was called out on the tannoy system at Wembley, but also when he made his first touch. The 29-year-old managed to silence some of the crowd though as England eased to a 3-0 win.

And Maguire even received some praise for his part in England’s second goal of the night. His pass to set Ollie Watkins away in the build-up to Raheem Sterling’s goal had United fans admiring his abilities, and hoping they can see more of them before the end of the season.

It was a great night for United’s Portuguese stars as they booked their place at this year’s World Cup. Bruno Fernandes proved to be the hero as his double secured a 2-0 win over North Macedonia in the playoff final.

Having overcome European champions Italy in their semi-final, the visitors were looking to cause another upset in Porto. The hosts though were in firm control of their destiny, with United’s talisman playing a key role.

Cristiano Ronaldo set his club-mate up for his first of the evening, before Fernandes added his second after the break to secure Portugal’s place on the plane to Qatar. It means Ronaldo will have another chance to add the missing trophy from his collection this year.
