Harry Maguire form at Manchester United could open door for Ralf Rangnick to name new captain

It's pretty obvious that some of Manchester United's players are struggling to perform at the level needed if the club are to make it back to the summit of English football.

The second half of the 1-1 draw against Burnley was one of the most disappointing spells of the Ralf Rangnick era and the sight of United dropping points from a winning position is becoming an all too regular occurrence.

It would be unfair to pin the blame for the Turf Moor result on just one player but captain Harry Maguire certainly didn't enjoy his finest hour.

The 28-year-old has come under a huge amount of scrutiny from United supporters this season, with Raphael Varane's positive performances alongside him only serving to highlight the individual errors he's made.

The most frustrating part of it all is that United fans know how good he can be.

Last season, Maguire was arguably Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's most important defender and his fine form continued into Euro 2020 where he played a key role in England's route to the final.

This season has been a totally different story and questions are beginning to be asked about his position as captain.

A lot of fans have already decided that Maguire should have the armband taken away from him, even if it just helps take some of the pressure off him for a few months.

The main problem in doing this would be the issue of who inherits the armband. The obvious replacement has got to be Bruno Fernandes.

The 27-year-old hasn't been as prolific this season as he was last, but his numbers are still consistent and United are a far better team with him in the starting XI.

In 30 appearances in all competitions, Fernandes has seven goals and 12 assists, proving he's undoubtedly United's best creative midfielder.
