Manchester United could replace Harry Maguire with Chelsea star this summer

Manchester United are eager to sign Chelsea defender Antonio Rudiger on a free transfer this summer.

Rudiger is in the final six months of his contract at Stamford Bridge and will hold off on making a decision on his future until the end of the season.

The Germany international has already rejected one offer from the Blues with Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain also among the sides interested in luring him away from west London.

The Mirror report that United are also keen on the 28-year-old – with Ralf Rangnick a big admirer.

United’s interest in Rudiger could also ‘cast a shadow’ on the future of Harry Maguire, the report adds.

While Rudiger is reportedly seeking a deal worth £400,000-a-week, United are aware it could cost them more to bring in someone of Rudiger’s calibre if they are to make a major change at the back this summer.

Maguire has endured a troubled season at Old Trafford where his role as club captain has reportedly been undermined within the United dressing room.

Ralf Rangnick has persistently and publicly backed the England international however with former United defender Gary Pallister confident he will rediscover his best form.

‘He’ll want to be a part of bringing Manchester United coming back to form and becoming a better team,’ Pallister told Metro.co.uk.

‘He’s got the captaincy and the responsibility, so he’ll feel it’s down to him to lead and he can do that by being on the pitch.

‘I don’t think he’s the type of character to look for a cop out like that, so he’ll want to play through it.

‘It doesn’t do anyone any favours and it could be seen as a sign of weakness if you’re not hurt about being left out.

‘I’m 100% positive that he’ll want to fight his way through it.’
