Harry Kane’s 50th England goal earns Nations League draw in Germany

Harry Kane’s late spot-kick secured Gareth Southgate’s side a hard-fought Nations League draw in Germany as the skipper became the second man to score 50 goals for England.

The Three Lions arrived in Munich looking to replicate last summer’s memorable Euro 2020 last-16 victory against Die Mannschaft and bounce back from Saturday’s shock loss to unfancied Hungary.

But the second of four Nations League matches in this 11-day slog also looked set to end in defeat after Jonas Hofmann struck for Germany, only for Kane to score a late penalty and ensure a 1-1 draw and move to within three goals of Wayne Rooney's mark.

"I love scoring goals, I have always loved it especially for my country. Whenever I can help the team I am glad to do that," Kane told Channel 4 afterwards.

"It is really important to show the mentality. One-nil behind we showed good character to get back into the game and get a result. We are playing against a very good Germany side. We still have important matches but the World Cup will be here before we know it.

"I had a couple of chances earlier, the first one was over the bar and Manuel Neuer made a good save for the second. We kept going and played our best football in the last half an hour. Good to get the goal and a shame not to nick it at the end."

Molineux matches against Euro 2020 final foes Italy and Hungary follow after a night that ended on a high – and seemed to go without fan trouble inside the Allianz Arena.
