‘Hard to see a downside’ – Birmingham eyeing up swoop for 28-year-old defender: The verdict

Birmingham City have taken defender Andre Wisdom on trial in a bid to potentially address their injury crisis, per the Birmingham Mail.

The 28-year-old has been without a club since leaving Derby County in the summer after playing 38 times last season for the Rams.

With injuries recently picked up to Marc Roberts and loanee Teden Mengi, Lee Bowyer is looking to address that and he will look at ex-Liverpool man Wisdom to see if he fits the bill.

It’s worth considering as a move, I think.

Wisdom is a player who knows this level very well and he has lots to offer the right club, I think that is fair to say.

He is a versatile player and that could see him fit in well under Lee Bowyer, who likes to change systems and have different options available to him depending on who his teams are facing.

Wisdom would obviously be a low-cost option, too, given his current status and Bowyer did seem to want to add to his defence in January, though perhaps didn’t get to do all he wanted.

That all said, I don’t think it’s a bad shout at all.

This does come as a bit of surprise after Lee Bowyer showed a disinterest on pursuing free agent signing when questioned on the subject this week.

However, it is hard to see a downside of bringing someone like Andre Wisdom into the fold.

The time he has spent out of the game does come as a concern and suggests that it would take him a few games to get up to speed.
