Hamann: Kenny's been kidding the Irish public over progress

Stephen Kenny has been misleading the Irish public by saying that the Republic of Ireland have improved during his time in charge, according to RTÉ soccer analyst Didi Hamann.

Ireland's very feint European Championship qualification hopes were extinguished by Greece tonight, a sobering 2-0 defeat that means Gus Poyet’s side have collected six points against the Boys in Green.

Speaking after the match, Hamann said the loss, which leaves Ireland with just three points from six games in Group B, represents the "rock bottom" moment of Kenny’s rocky time in the hot-seat.

Since succeeding Martin O’Neill in 2020, Kenny has won just five out of 27 competitive games, with three qualifications ending in early disappointment.

"This is as low at it has been under his tenure, and it hasn’t been great since he has taken over," the former German international said.

"They have never won a game when it has mattered. They won a couple of dead rubbers. Each qualification campaign was pretty much over after two or three games.

"This was rock bottom. They made Greece look like a top-10 team."

Ireland will conclude the group with games against Gibraltar (Monday) and Netherlands next month, before signing off on 2023 with a friendly against New Zealand.

Kenny’s contract runs out at the end of the Euro 2024 qualification campaign, with the FAI saying it will carry out a review before making a decision on the manager’s future.

Hamann is convinced that neither results nor performances have been up to scratch under Kenny’s watch.
