Hair care giant Olaplex issues statement after removing ingredient linked to infertility
Hair care giant Olaplex has issued a statement about the safety of one of its products after fears an ingredient it contained was linked to infertility in women.
Earlier this week, Olaplex confirmed it had removed Lilial from its popular best-selling products, the No.3 Hair Perfector, saying that although the ingredient linked to infertility in women it was present in such low concentration that the product was safe.
In 2020, the EU announced that Lillial was to be phased out and it was officially classified as 'reprotoxic' meaning it could have adverse effects on fertility, as well as on the development of a foetus.

As a result, it was ruled that all products containing lilial must be off the shelves by 1st March 2022 in EU countries and Northern Ireland, while the Cosmetic, Toiletry & Perfumery Association (CTPA) has confirmed a ban in Great Britain is expected to follow soon.
Lilial has been used in various household products for years, but the discovery it had been used in Olaplex's No.3 Hair Perfector caused panic amongst millions.
Posting on Instagram, Olaplex captioned the image: "We are sharing this Statement for the millions of women who have been mentally stressed from the inaccurate narrative on the Lilial phase-out. We are calling for calm and for all of us to help each other and to let the facts guide us. #olaplex."
Olaplex's post read: "Cosmetic Experts at The Cosmetic Regulatory have clarified that lilial is usually present in formulations at a concentration of 0.1 pe cent or less and "is not enough to directly impact infertility."
