Guenther Steiner reflects on Spain Grand Prix weekend as Haas suffer rotten luck

Haas boss Guenther Steiner has offered his take on the Spanish Grand Prix weekend for his team, which promised much but ended with disappointment.

There were strong hopes of points being delivered by the team at the Circuit de Catalunya, with both drivers getting themselves into the top 10 in Saturday’s qualifying session.

Things unravelled quickly come lights out on Sunday, though, with Kevin Magnussen dropping right to the back of the field and out of contention after a collision with Lewis Hamilton.

Mick Schumacher, meanwhile, actually initially profited from that incident and was going along in the points-paying places but strategy calls meant that he too would finish outside of the top 10 come the chequered flag – meaning his wait for first championship points in F1 continues.

Steiner, then, has reflected on the result with him admitting that it was a disappointing end to what had been such a positive weekend to begin with:

“Obviously we took away some disappointment. We did a few things which weren’t perfect, but we have a lot of work to do.

“We can’t do anything about Kevin’s turn 4 incident, you can’t learn a lot there and what we tried was something hoping that the safety car would come out.

“With Mick, we need to see why we ended up with the strategy we chose and what we can do to make it better for the future. I’m not jumping to conclusions, it wasn’t completely wrong as there were a lot of unknowns, especially in his first stint with the new tyres where we lost a lot of positions there, so we have to analyze that before coming to a conclusion.” 

A real shame for the Haas team, and they’ll be hoping to try and get back on the points trail this weekend as the Monaco Grand Prix returns for another edition.
