Grosjean has Wolff’s word about Mercedes test

Mercedes boss Toto Wolff has promised Romain Grosjean will still receive his test for the team, saying he will not go back on his word.

Grosjean’s Formula 1 career was cut two races short by a terrifying fireball crash at the 2020 Bahrain Grand Prix while driving for Haas.

Thankfully, he escaped that scene with only burns to his hands, but that was his final experience of Formula 1 as he was then ruled out of the final two races he had been scheduled to contest before leaving Haas and Formula 1.

Grosjean though did not want that to be his last time behind the wheel of a Formula 1 car, at which point Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff stepped in with the offer of a test run.

Sadly, a change to the calendar due to Covid meant it could not take place at the 2021 French Grand Prix as planned, while the test cannot happen at Paul Ricard in 2022 either due to another clash with Grosjean’s IndyCar commitments.

But Grosjean recently said at an IndyCar press conference he had messaged Wolff following the conclusion of the 2021 season, receiving a reply saying the plan is to get him in the car in 2022.

And now Wolff has confirmed Grosjean will definitely get the test, as he had given his word and never goes back on that.

“The test will happen for sure,” said Wolff, quoted by Autosport.

“We’ve committed to it. [We are seeing] what we can do and what he can do. But that is going to happen. When I give my word, I give my word.”

Grosjean does at least already have his helmet ready to go for the test, having shown it during a video where he looked through his racing gear at home.
