Great-grandfather’s cancer journey inspires new NHS roadshow
When great-grandfather Tom Slattery noticed a lump on his neck in 2023, he didn’t ignore it.
He got medical advice straight away - and that quick decision changed everything as he was diagnosed with cancer.
He recalled: “It was scary at first, but seeing the doctor quickly was the best thing I ever did.

It provides clear, accessible information about the signs and symptoms of cancers such as ovarian, bowel, and prostate.
Launching on Wednesday, October 29, on Market Street in Manchester, the roadshow will visit all 10 boroughs of Greater Manchester over the next seven months.
On board, specially trained staff will offer free, friendly conversations about spotting cancer early - just as Tom did.
Whether you stop to pick up a leaflet, have a quick chat, or simply learn what to look out for, This Van Can is here to make those important conversations easier.
The earlier cancer is found, the easier it is to treat.
