And with just two years remaining on his contract, it remains unclear whether he will extend his stay in north London. The Switzerland midfielder has made 29 appearances for the Gunners this season to help them secure a place in Europe.

However, following Monday’s defeat at Newcastle Mikel Arteta’s side are set to miss out on a top-four finish and a lucrative return to the Champions League. After the 2-0 defeat at St James’ Park which left fourth-placed Tottenham two points ahead of Arsenal with just one game remaining; Xhaka didn't hold back in his criticism of his teammates.

"I don’t know, I can’t explain to you why. We didn’t do what the game plan was, not listening to the coach, doing our own things and when you do your own things this is what happens," He told Sky Sports.

"It was a disastrous performance and like this, you don’t deserve to play Champions League, we didn't deserve to play even Europa League and it’s very hard to take it at the moment. I don’t know why we are doing what the coach is asking for us."
