Graham Arnold in Rangers manager quip as Australia boss left 'waiting' for Ibrox call before Michael Beale move

Australia boss Graham Arnold has joked he was waiting on a call from Rangers before they decided to appoint Michael Beale.

Arnold led the the Socceroos to a thrilling run to the last 16 of the World Cup in Qatar leading to speculation ramping up that a club in Europe could make their move to land the boss. However, he opted to pledge his future to the Oz national side and will lead Australia into the Asian Cup in 2024 - with the boss targeting another World Cup appearance in 2026 when the tournament takes place in North America.

The former Sydney FC and Central Coast Mariners gaffer has admitted he would consider a return to club management - while heaping plaudits on Ange Postecoglou's success at club level and with Celtic. Speaking on the 'Sacked in the Morning' podcast, Arnold was asked if he had thought about returning to a club job and quipped about facing off with Postecoglou: "I was hoping Glasgow Rangers would come in.

"They were looking for a manager at the time (before he signed the new deal). But they went for Michael Beale. I was waiting for that but I ended up not getting it."

Pressed on if he would like to follow the career trajectory of Ange Postecoglou, Arnold went on: “Look, I think I’ll see how things go for the first six months of the year but my heart is with the green and gold. The Australian boys.

“Club football is always something that I do miss today. Missing being around players, building their culture in the dressing room and playing games every week. But Ange is doing a fantastic job. Obviously, Australia is very, very proud of him. But it would have to be a good club for me to change from Australia.”
