Graeme Souness slams Man United's signing of Casemiro and says he's 'never been a great player'

Manchester United's signing of Casemiro has been criticised by former Liverpool player Graeme Souness as he claims the midfielder has "never been a great player".

The 30-year-old will provide a much-needed upgrade to United's midfield after Erik ten Hag's side endured a disappointing start to the season. The holding midfielder bid an emotional farewell to his Real Madrid teammates as they held a press conference on Monday to pay tribute to the player.

Casemiro has won the Champions League five times with Madrid and it will be this winning mentality that Ten Hag will be looking to instil among his squad.

However, the deal for the midfielder has been met with some criticism as questions are asked over the player's age and his price tag. Souness is one of these critics and the former Liverpool player did not hold back when offering his opinion on what is set to be United's fourth signing this summer.

Souness told talkSPORT: "You’re getting a ‘steady Eddie’. He was playing with great players, he’s not a great player, he’s never been a great player.

"I see him being a ‘steady Eddie’ who will help United be more solid in the midfield. I don’t think he’s got any great range of passing, I don’t think he’s going to make other people play. The Real Madrid and that midfield in particular was full of footballing types.

"He’s 30 years old, it’s £60million with add-ons, it’s too much money. It’s Man United all over again, Man United will pay a premium for players. But I don’t see him making [them] any better when he has the ball.

"I think he was lucky to be in that Real Madrid team, I never look forward to watching Casemiro play, [Karim]
