Graeme Souness sets challenge for Mason Mount following Manchester United transfer

Former Liverpool midfielder Graeme Souness has challenged Mason Mount to add more goals to his game following his summer move to Manchester United.

Mount was unveiled as the club's first signing of the summer last month, swapping Chelsea for United for an initial fee of £55million. The Reds could end up paying up to £60m because of add-ons.

Boss Erik ten Hag was desperate to freshen up his midfield ahead of the start of this season and Mount was identified as his top target. He featured prominently in pre-season, giving the Dutchman, his new teammates and United's supporters an insight into what he will bring to M16.

For much of pre-season, however, Mount looked better without the ball than with it, courtesy of his ability to lead the midfield press. Nevertheless, he did take up some good attacking positions and should have scored in last Saturday's 3-1 win over RC Lens at Old Trafford.

Mount, though he is expected to take up the No.8 position in United's midfield, has the ability to score goals, just as he demonstrated during the 2021/22 season when he plundered 13 in all competitions for Chelsea. And even though Souness believes the England international has the potential to become a 'star' in United colours, he wants to see more from him.

"I have always liked Mount, there is nothing to dislike about him," Souness told the Mail. "He has great technique and works his socks off.
