Graeme Souness rates Erik ten Hag’s new Manchester United policy in dig at Ralf Rangnick

Graeme Souness admires Erik ten Hag’s hard line on discipline at Manchester United, although doesn’t believe the squad is good enough to compete with the elite just yet.

Ten Hag has instilled a fresh all-in, no-nonsense policy at Old Trafford, something that seemingly wasn’t present during Ralf Rangnick’s stint at the club. The Dutchman’s bold approach means he isn’t afraid to drop big names such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Harry Maguire and most recently Jadon Sancho.

Following a horrendous start against Brighton and Brentford, United went on a four-game winning streak in the league but succumbed to a heavy derby defeat to Manchester City. After a nervous win over Europa League minnows Omonia in midweek, the Reds ran out 2-1 winners away at Everton thanks to Ronaldo’s 700th club career goal.

Speaking on talkSPORT, Souness admitted Ten Hag had set himself up well by implementing high levels of professionalism. However, he caveated his praise by suggesting that Rangnick - whose name Souness had forgotten - had set a low bar to beat.
