Lage's Wolves were downed by Tomas Soucek's goal just before the hour mark, the Czech Republic midfielder ghosting into the visitors' penalty box to slot home past Jose Sa.

Soucek latched onto Michail Antonio's cross with his outstretched right leg having been afforded the freedom of Wolves' six-yard box to secure a valuable three points for the Hammers.

Saiss stepped up to leave Soucek unmarked and Souness, on punditry duty for broadcaster Sky Sports, lambasted the Moroccan's decision not to follow his captain Conor Coady.

Lage says Wolves needed to freshen things up to compete with West Ham as he jumped to Francisco Trincao’s defence.

Wolves’ line-up against West Ham showed five changes from the defeat to Arsenal on Thursday, with key players Joao Moutinho, Daniel Podence and Raul Jimenez all benched. Leander Dendoncker, Trincao and Fabio Silva started in place of the aforementioned trio.

Ki-Jana Hoever made his first start in two months with Nelson Semedo missing due to a hamstring injury, while Marcal also replaced Rayan Ait-Nouri at left wing-back.
