Graeme Souness hails Tottenham ‘masterclass’ in shock win at Manchester City

Graeme Souness described Tottenham’s performance as a ‘masterclass in counter-attacking football’ in their stunning 3-2 win at Manchester City on Saturday evening.

City had won 14 and drawn one of their last 15 Premier League games, while Spurs were in a bit of a rut after three straight league defeats.

Pep Guardiola’s side dominated possession, ending the match with 72 per cent of the play and 21 shots on goal to Tottenham’s six, but it was the north Londoners who came away with three points thanks to an opener from Dejan Kulusevski and a brace from Harry Kane.

Ilkay Gundogan equalised in the first half for City and then Riyad Mahrez in the 92nd minute from the penalty spot before Kane’s heroics.

Liverpool legend Souness felt it was the perfect display from a side coming to Manchester City, where it is almost impossible to go toe-to-toe with the champions.

‘You’ve got a team coming to the best team in the land who are coming here feeling sorry for themselves and having a totally different game plan, they couldn’t play like that every week Spurs, sitting back and playing counter-attacking football,’ Souness told Sky Sports.

‘That was a masterclass. Like a big away game in Europe, go there and nick a result. You’re not going to have a lot of the ball, but you’re going to be threatening and get goals.

‘It was a masterclass by Spurs today on playing counter-attacking football.’

Kane was the star of the show as he twice gave Tottenham the lead, scoring the winner in the 95th minute, while he also initiated the first goal with a superb pass for Son Heung-min, and Souness thought the England captain was superb.

‘He was fantastic, not just his goals but his general play, he was a real problem,’ said the Scot.
