Graeme Murty in major post Rangers chance as Eddie Howe's Newcastle come calling

Former Rangers boss Graeme Murty could be heading back to Newcastle United. The former Ibrox gaffer is in the running for a job with the Premier League's club academy.

During his time at Rangers, the coach gained experience managing in different levels of the game. Murty joined the Govan side as a development coach back in August 2016, taking the under-20s team to the final of the Scottish Youth Cup in 2017 where they were pipped to the post by Celtic.

The coach was twice placed in caretaker charge of the first team in the same year before taking on the role full time in December 2017 until Steven Gerrard took the job on that summer. The former Scotland defender then returned to his previous role in charge of the under-20s, winning the SPFL Reserve League on goal difference as well as reaching the Glasgow Cup Final during the 2018/19 campaign.

Murty left Rangers in November 2021. He came close to landing the Ayr United manager's position before they opted to appoint Lee Bullen. But now he could be making his way back into football south of the border instead.

He is set to take a role in the Tyneside club's youth system ahead of the 2022/23 campaign. He'll link up with Magpies boss Eddie Howe, who was close to joining Celtic before Ange Postecoglou took the reins.
