GPA exploring viability of legacy medical care for injured players

The Gaelic Players Association is exploring how to work with various Gaelic games associations to develop a legacy care programme, ensuring that inter-county medical teams and county boards provide medical care for eligible players, post inter-county season and post-career.

That prospect is just one of a number of motions on the GPA agenda for its annual AGM which takes place next Monday evening, 1 July.

Following the AGM, the player group's annual report 2023 will also be published.

Another motion for the GPA membership to consider is engagement with the LGFA to secure appropriate injury cover to safeguard inter-county players from financial hardship or loss.

Dublin footballer Jack McCaffrey has a proposal for the AGM that the GPA would work with the various associations to ensure that exact dates for all fixtures in the Championship are decided and circulated to players at the earliest possible date prior to the start of the competition.

The GPA members will also be asked to back a motion to determine inter-county players’ preferences on the Camogie Association mandated wearing of skorts with respect to their comfort, wellbeing and performance. This has been submitted by Mary Ryan (on behalf of Tipperary Camogie Squad).

And the development of that legacy care programme is also up for consideration.

The results of those votes will be made available early next week with a full annual report issued next Tuesday morning.
