Gone: Newspaper Editor says Ross Wilson will now let 'highly coveted' Rangers player leave

The Daily Record Live Sports Editor Gavin Berry fully expects Rangers defender Jack Simpson to leave Ibrox this summer. 

Rangers announced in January 2021 that they had struck a pre-contract deal with Simpson ahead of the 21/22 season, with his Bournemouth deal due to expire (via Sky Sports).

But the Steven Gerrard signing has wound up playing very little football for the Gers. His only start in the Scottish Premiership came in a 1-1 draw with Motherwell back in September, and he’s made just two substitute appearances.

Three run-outs in the SFA Cup and the Scottish League Cup take him to a measly total of six games in all competitions.

Championship outfits Swansea City and Middlesbrough reportedly enquired about a loan deal for Simpson in January, but Rangers were only interested in selling him.

The Daily Record’s Sports Editor notes that Simpson was ‘linked’ with a move away in January and thinks his time in Glasgow will be up come the summer.

He writes that the 25-year-old will ‘surely return to England’ when the transfer window opens.

Rangers should at least make a profit, with Simpson valued at £900,000 by Transfermarkt and protected by a contract that runs until the summer of 2025.

He had a chance to impress against Motherwell in the autumn but perhaps didn’t take it, with his SofaScore rating of 6.4/10 the lowest of the team’s outfielders.

Simpson lost six of the nine duels he contested that day and was dribbled past by the opposition on three occasions.
