Gold up for grabs as Blitzboks beat Australia to setup Commonwealth Games clash against Fiji

The Blitzboks will play Fiji for the gold medal at the Commonwealth Games sevens on Sunday evening after they beat Australia 24-12 in their semi-final clash.

Australia opened the scoring when Mark Nawaqanitawase crossed over in the left-hand corner for an unconverted try and an early 5-0 lead.

The Blitzboks hit back in the 5th minute as Angelo Davids collected a clever kick ahead into to score.

Ronald Brown converted as South Africa led 7-5.

Some impressive handling and interplay by Australia saw them hit straight back immediately as Matt Gonazlez cruised over for a converted try with a minute left in the half to give them a 12-7 lead.

The Blitzboks, however, weren't done for the half and Angelo Davids scored out wide in injury time after Australia were reduced to six men following a yellow card.

Brown couldn't add the conversion as the teams went into the break deadlocked at 12-all.

Selvyn Davids drew first blood for the Blitzboks in the second half as he pounced on an Australian handling error to speed away from the defence and score.

Brown added a difficult conversion as South Africa's lead moved out to 19-12 with five minutes left.

Angelo Davids put the game to bed with under two minutes left on the clock as he beat a defender to score his hat-trick try.

Brown couldn't add the conversion, but with a 24-12 lead, Neil Powell's men had done enough.

The gold medal final against Fiji takes place at 22:04 (SA time).
