Gold medalist James Guy running local swim camp for budding Olympians

Olympic gold medalist James Guy will be coming to the area later this year to coach a range of competitive swimmers.

Over the next three years, James is focusing heavily on his swim camps which give young budding Olympians and athletes an intense course of training to better their technique. Cleethorpes, a town which he holds close to his heart, is the first of five camps to be announced.

James will be working very closely with Cleethorpes and District Swimming Club ready to hold the swim camp this year on Saturday 24 September at Grimsby Leisure Centre. The club told Grimsby Live that there is an open invitation for any competitive swimmers in the surrounding areas, including Lincoln, Scunthorpe and Louth to join.

Ceinwen Fews runs Cleethorpes and District Swimming Club alongside Chris Charlton. They told us how the swimming community was hit hard by the covid-19 pandemic as many local clubs were forced to close. "From a committee point of view, this is a thank you to our swimmers and their parents for supporting us through the pandemic. We're lucky to still be here," she said.

As part of the day, James will be getting heavily involved and joining the up-and-coming athletes in the pool and showing them firsthand his techniques and giving them tips to better theirs. Alongside this, James' brother Luke will also be running seasonal wellbeing camps for the swimmers, diving into the training and nutrition side of being a world-class swimmer.

"All the kids are googling them and getting really excited. I think for the older swimmers, who aspires to be a bit like James, this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity," added Ceinwen.
