Joe Fuller’s spectacular late winner saw Simla win an excellent GoCardless Kent Sunday Premier Cup Final over Guru Nanak.
An entertaining game at Maidstone’s Gallagher Stadium on Sunday could have easily gone either way as both teams had chances and there were fine saves from both keepers.
Winning Simla manager James MacGregor lost his voice so long-serving Bradley Draper explained what it meant to the club to win the trophy.
“It’s hard to take in, there’s a lot of people in the squad who are 41 and at the end of their careers and then it goes all the way down to the 18-year-olds,” he said.
“We’ve been together a number of years but the youngsters have come through and kept some life in the old boys so it’s been a great mix.
“I joined six years ago and I know this means a lot to everyone, the gaffer has been here for 17 years and has lost two finals previously. It just means a lot to a lot of people to get it over the line.
“Now we can pass it on to the younger generation to take the club forward and some of us old boys can retire!
“Leo Vowles, the two centre-halves of Stewart Gostlow and Ben Overton were superb.
“Joe had a feeling he was going to score. He’s the same age as me, 41, and he slowed the pace down and that experience shone through for us.”
A rare error by Ben Overton nearly gifted Guru an early opener but Zack Manning shot over from close range.
Simla responded and Ashton Maluon-Chandler’s shot was saved before Guru keeper Cameron Sanghera did brilliantly to deny player-of-the-match Vowles, who was played in by Harry Hudson.
When Guru’s Diljit Boora trod on the ball, it let in Brad Austin but his early shot was comfortably gathered by the keeper.
