Goalscorer Robbie McKenzie’s reaction to Gillingham’s late win at Barrow in League Two

Robbie McKenzie hopes his late winner can help provide the confidence boost that Gillingham have been searching for.

The Gills were heading towards another blank in front of goal and a stalemate at Barrow before McKenzie’s late intervention.

He spun and fired home from inside a crowded area to net Gills’ winner with seconds left of the League Two match.

It was far from a classic at Holker Street, but McKenzie’s cool finish in stoppage-time was just what the side needed after the previous week’s disappointing home loss against Oldham.

McKenzie said: “Responding [to last weekend] was the main thing we wanted to do and put it in for the fans because there were plenty of them and it's a long old trip.

“Nothing beats scoring late on. It was amazing [support], especially the journey that they've done. I wouldn't like to know what time they all woke up to get there, but we appreciated it, and hopefully, we sent them home happy.

“That can lift us up, and give us good confidence going into the next game. All we can look at is the next game and go into that with the confidence that we can beat teams, and we're good enough to beat teams in this league.”

Neither the Gills nor Barrow had seen many wins of late in what was a battle of two teams in desperate need of a lift.

McKenzie’s goal was just what Gillingham needed, ending a run of three straight losses and claiming a first win over Barrow since 1967.

“It was a positive feeling in the dressing room [afterwards],” said the midfielder.

“We worked hard all week for those three points, and it wasn't an easy game. It was a bit of a League Two classic, not a lot in it, and thankfully, we came out with something in the end.
