GMP detective accused of sex attacks on three women to face trial

A serving Greater Manchester Police detective will face trial over allegations he sexually assaulted three women. Detective Sergeant Richard Mills denied three offences involving one woman when he appeared in court last October.

He re-appeared today (Tuesday, March 5) at Liverpool Crown Court to face two further allegations involving two other women, which he also denied. The 41-year-old, of Oakley Way, Wardle, Rochdale, had been due to face trial beginning on July 8.

Those proceedings have now been put back until December 9 so all the charges can be tried together. Mr Mills pleaded not guilty to sexually assaulting a woman between September 1, 2019 and April 30, 2020 and sexually assaulting another woman on July 22, 2022.

When he appeared last autumn, he denied three offences of sexually assaulting a woman between January 1, 2014 and September 8, 2016. The officer, who worked at Nexus House in Ashton-under-Lyne, has been suspended from duty.

Mr Mills has been further remanded on bail, with conditions not to approach any prosecution witnesses, until July 5 for a further case management hearing. In an earlier statement, Greater Manchester Police said disciplinary proceedings will recommence following the conclusion of criminal proceedings.

The charges follow an investigation by GMP's Professional Standards Branch.
