Glenn Hoddle spots 'weird' Rangers penalty flaw as pundit left confused over encroachment rulebook

James Tavernier failed to hit the net from the penalty spot during Rangers' 5-2 Scottish Premiership victory over St Mirren - but Glenn Hoddle believes the Ibrox skipper could have been allowed to retake his effort following an apparent infringement from an opposition player.

Tavernier has 15 racked up goals from 32 league games this season, however, on this occasion his effort was saved by Buddies stopper Trevor Carson after just five minutes. The mis-cue took former Light Blues hero Alan Hutton by surprise along with the majority of the home crowd, although fellow pundit and Record Sport columnist Chris Sutton joked their could've been an encroachment which would subsequently have led to another opportunity for the usually reliable Tavernier to beat Carson from 12-yards.

Speaking on BT Sport Score, Hutton said: “You don’t expect that from Tavernier. He’s normally excellent in these sorts of situations, especially after scoring two goals last weekend. There, that’s not one of his better ones. He gives the goalkeeper a good opportunity to get a hand on it.”

“Surprised there’s not a retake. You never know," quipped Sutton as he discussed whether Steven McLean should look for an intrusion into the box after Tavernier was denied.

Former Tottenham Hotspur man Hoddle then weighed in questioning why the match referee or the VAR officials didn't allow Tavernier to retake the spot kick while stating his verdict on the current rulebook.

He replied: “If the St Mirren defender heads that, it is a retake, he does encroach. He tried to head it, it’s a weird rule.”
