Glastonbury 2025 fans defend Neil Young from 'haters' after Charli XCX claims

Many Glastonbury viewers have been rushing to defend Neil Young from the 'haters' after his headline slot at this year's festival, while claims are made about Charli XCX's clashing set.

Canadian rocker Neil opened his headline set at Glastonbury on the Pyramid Stage with the song Sugar Mountain, saying “thank you folks” to the crowd as the song ended.

Neil's set ended up being shown live by the BBC on Saturday night (June 28) after the broadcaster had previously said it would not be transmitted live “at the artist’s request”.

But in a U-turn earlier on Saturday, a BBC statement said: "We are delighted to confirm that Neil Young’s headline set from Glastonbury on Saturday will be broadcast live to audiences across the UK on the BBC."

The 79-year-old's set also included songs Be The Rain, When You Dance I Can Really Love, Cinnamon Girl and Hey Hey, My My (Into the Black), with lyrics that reference Johnny Rotten, the stage name of Sex Pistols’ John Lydon.

At the same time as he headlined the Pyramid Stage, Charli XCX was seen taking to Glastonbury’s Other Stage on Saturday.

A giant black curtain dropped to the floor to unveil a background showing Charli XCX’s culture-shaping sixth studio album cover, Brat. The singer, wearing an all-black ensemble including sunglasses and knee-high boots began with songs including 360 and Von Dutch.

The 32-year-old played her Partygirl set at the festival in 2024, but this time the singer has taken to a much bigger stage amid a year that has seen her pick up a slew of awards.
