Gio van Bronckhorst in scathing Rangers verdict as boss insists stars failed to deliver his pre match demand

Giovanni van Bronckhorst admitted his Rangers' dreary Premier Sports Cup win over Dundee simply wasn't up to scratch.

The Ibrox side will face Aberdeen at Hampden in the semi-final but they made heavy weather of Wednesday night's last eight clash against Championship opposition. Steven Davis scored the only goal of the night inside 10 minutes but the promise of a entertaining evening for the home fans at Ibrox gradually fizzled out in a flat, uninspired display.

At full-time, there was no one more unimpressed than Van Bronckhorst as he dissected his team's display - insisting they lacked conviction going forward and let Dundee stay in the game for far too long. He picked out the final 30 minutes, in particular, as being well below the expected standard. Asked if Rangers delivered the improvement he demanded pre-match, Van Bronckhorst told Premier Sports: "No, I don't think so. A little bit but I cannot be happy with the performance today. We were not convincing, first-half we started okay and went 1-0 up.

"We dominated the first-half, they didn't have any chances, we kept looking for the goal with our runs. The last pass in the final third wasn't accurate enough to score the second goal. but we were well in the game.

"Second-half, we started well but after 10-15 minutes we dropped. We couldn't create any big chances and lost the ball too many times. Dundee had too many moments they were in the game, so I wasn't happy with the performance.

"We couldn't reach our wingers quickly enough, we were waiting instead of taking opportunities to create chances, we didn't circulate the ball quickly enough. The performance in the last 25 minutes, half an hour, could and should have been better."
