Gio van Bronckhorst follows Rangers salute with a PSV warning as he demands no more Champions League headstarts

Giovanni van Bronckhorst saluted a "huge" rescue act from Rangers before warning they can't afford to give PSV Eindhoven the same headstart. The Ibrox side smashed three past Union Saint-Gilloise at a raucous Ibrox to overturn a two-goal first first leg deficit and keep their Champions League group stage hopes alive.

James Tavernier' s late first-half penalty proved the springboard to further strikes from Antonio Colak and Malik Tillman as Rangers righted the wrongs of a dismal first leg in Belgium. They will next face Ruud van Nistelrooy's free-scoring PSV after the Dutch side overcame Monaco in a 3-2 thriller at the Phillips Stadion.

And Van Bronckhorst has told his players they need to be bang at it for both legs if they're to secure a place at Europe's top table. He told BBC Sportsound: "It was the same atmosphere (as Leipzig). The stakes were very high because of the performance we had last week, we had to overcome two goals.

"With the new rules for the away goals it's a bit easier than in the past but it was very important to keep the clean sheet and to try and create and score as many times as possible. We performed really well. This game needed a big performance and the players delivered a big performance. It is (a huge carrot getting to the group stage). That's why I'm really pleased we're still in contention to go to the group stage.

"We made this tie very difficult because of the first performance. We needed a huge performance today. Eventually we achieved that but to play against PSV in the next round we need two good performances. We know what went wrong last Tuesday but we need two games like we delivered today to get a chance to go through."
