Gillingham take former Wycombe Wanderers, Stevenage and Shrewsbury Town midfielder Nick Freeman on trial –Manager Gareth Ainsworth keen to see more
Gillingham had a trialist in action on Tuesday night and the manager’s already worked with him before.
Midfielder Nick Freeman played 45 minutes for the Gills on Tuesday night in a 3-0 win at Dover.
Freeman played under Ainsworth at Wycombe Wanderers, where he made close to 150 league games over a seven-year period.
Two-and-a-half years at Stevenage in League One followed, before he joined Ainsworth’s old club Shrewsbury in January of this year, making 16 league appearances.
Freeman has mainly operated in a defensive midfield role and has also played at right-back, but was pushed further forward on Tuesday night, and Ainsworth likes his versatility
“He’s super, super versatile,” said the Gills boss.
“A real glider along the pitch. Got great touch on the ball.
“He probably wasn’t at his best [against Dover] but definitely in training, we've seen what Nick can do.
“We'll see where that goes but he’s a great lad and he’ll give absolutely everything for me and [technical director] Dobbo.
“Let's hope we see more of that in the next few weeks.”
