Gillingham’s former promotion-winning manager Peter Taylor appointed assistant coach of the Thailand national team

Former Gillingham manager Peter Taylor has taken on another international coaching role at the age of 73.

Taylor has joined the coaching staff of the Thailand national team as they prepare for the inaugural FIFA ASEAN Cup.

The veteran coach has enjoyed a long and varied career in football, including three spells at Priestfield and a stint as caretaker manager of England.

His first spell with the Gills remains his most memorable.

Taylor guided Gillingham to promotion to the second tier in 2000, beating Wigan Athletic in the Division Two play-off final at Wembley.

That same season also saw the Gills reach the FA Cup quarter-finals, knocking out Premiership opposition Bradford City and Sheffield Wednesday along the way.

His success earned Taylor a move to Leicester City in the top flight, with Andy Hessenthaler taking over as Gillingham's player-manager.

Taylor also had the honour of taking charge of England as caretaker manager for their 1-0 defeat to Italy at Wembley in November 2000.

He had started out in management at Dartford and was also Dover manager in the Conference. As a player, he won four England caps and later on in his playing career had a spell at Maidstone United.

He went on to manage Brighton, Hull City, Crystal Palace, Stevenage and Wycombe, while also having two spells in charge of England Under-21s.

There were also managerial roles with Bradford City and the Bahrain national team, as well as a spell as England Under-20 boss.

Taylor returned to Gillingham for a second stint in 2013, initially taking over on an interim basis following the sacking of Martin Allen.

That spell proved far less successful and Taylor was sacked just over a year later.
