Gillingham manager Mark Bonner on what he hopes for in the January transfer window

Gillingham manager Mark Bonner has outlined what he hopes for in the January transfer window.

George Lapslie left for Bradford City this week and he might not be the only one leaving as the Gills look to free up room on the wage bill to bring in some fresh faces.

Lapslie’s early exit could mean the Gills get to complete a signing of their own shortly.

Bonner said: “We want to change things if we can. We want to try and make some additions to the squad but we do need to free some room up in the squad to do that.

“The opportunities will come, I'm sure, when interest in our players comes, as the window opens.

“Lapo's been brilliant for me since I've come in. His situation in the summer was what it was (being made available for transfer).

“He's played an important part in a couple of games as well and been a really good pro.

“I love him as a character, but he's got himself a decent contract up there for two and a half years. It's really good security for him from where he was in a position with only a few months left on his contract.

“It allows us to maybe start early in the month doing a little bit of work and changing and adding and changing the dynamic of the squad a little bit, which we'll try to do as best we can.

“There's certainly a few things being lined up and nothing secured yet at all.

“We'd love to be able to do a couple of things early if we could, but the order in which you can sign players, the timing of when you can sign them in a crazy month, it might be a little bit up and down throughout the month, but we'll see how it plays out.

“I have an idea of how I'd like it to get to, but at the same time, a little bit is going to be led by what interest there is in ours as well.
