Gillingham manager Gareth Ainsworth reminded of his Van Basten-esque volley for QPR as his team look for their first goal of the season at Priestfield this Saturday

And it’s quite some effort. Footage of Ainsworth’s spectacular strike resurfaced online this week - giving his Gillingham players a timely reminder of how it’s done.

Ainsworth was playing for QPR 23 years ago when he scored a stunning volley from around 25 yards against Rushden & Diamonds.

The midfielder struck twice that day – and his second wasn’t bad either – as Rangers came from behind to draw 3-3 away from home in Division 2. It was his spectacular volley that has caught the eye again this week.

The goal has been likened to Marco van Basten’s famous volley for AC Milan - and Ainsworth admits it has brought back some happy memories.

“There’s two in that game,” he said. “So, if you want to check out the other goal in that game, that was pretty decent too.

“It was nice. The amount of people who’ve told me they were at that game over the years, there must have been 10,000 at that game. What a football club that was to play for.

“The only thing that kills me is it was 23 years ago. That seems so long ago and the footage seems a bit grainy, like we’re looking back in the 70s.

“I wish it had been now, with all the slow-mos and the high-definition and everything, but I have to make do.

“That was me once. Not sure about the haircut back then though.”

The Gills have failed to score in their opening three games, losing 3-0 at home to both Luton Town in the the Carabao Cup and Walsall in the league before drawing 0-0 at Fleetwood last weekend.

Ainsworth insists the goals will come, pointing to the number of chances his side have created.

Any goal will
