Gillingham manager Gareth Ainsworth on going top of League 2 after 1-0 win at Oldham Athletic

Manager Gareth Ainsworth has given his verdict after taking Gillingham to the top of League 2 on Saturday.

The Gills are yet to taste defeat under Ainsworth and made it 14 points from six games with a gritty 1-0 win at Oldham.

With former leaders Crewe stuffed by Swindon and Chesterfield held at home to Crawley, Gillingham now lead the way.

“Obviously, we won’t be getting carried away now, but I'll bring everyone down to earth,” said Ainsworth.

“We did deserve this performance because we ran and emptied the tank, covered every blade of grass against a team who, at home, feel like they can make something happen.

“They'll get going, Oldham will get going - Micky Mellon's a good manager.

“So, yes, sitting top is really nice, but it's very early days. We're not even, what is it, about a tenth of the way through the season.”

Ainsworth admitted that Gillingham’s bright start will mean they start to become a target for other teams.

He admitted the Gills raise their game against the so-called leading lights in the division and believes others will do the same against his men.

Ainsworth said: “I think what we are now is when we play top of the league, your Crewes and your Chesterfields, we seem to raise (our game) because they're top of the league.

“People will do that against us now, so we've got to be very wary of that.

“But we've got some good experience in the side and some young boys who are learning very quickly.

“I'm really pleased and, as I say, the league table is very early, so I don't really want to keep referencing it.

“But it's nice to be sat there at the end of six games and let’s see where we are at the end of 46 - that's important.”
