Gillingham and Rotherham United fans clash on the pitch at Priestfield following their League 1 match

Rival fans clashed on the pitch at Priestfield at the end of Gillingham’s match against Rotherham United.

The League 1 match ended with a 2-0 win for Rotherham, which meant they were promoted from the division and the Gills were relegated.

Play had already been held up as visiting supporters ran on to celebrate a goal that was ruled out by the referee and Rotherham's second goal in the 89th minute.

Flares were also lit and one was thrown onto the pitch.

Scuffles took place once the final whistle blew, with fans from both ends entering the pitch and meeting each other in the middle.

There were over 2,200 fans from South Yorkshire in attendance.

Rotherham supporters were encouraged to stay behind after the match, as a way of keeping fans apart. Long after the match had finished their players returned to celebrate promotion with their fans, while Gills supporters were asked to leave.

Some of those Gillingham fans who made their way onto the pitch chanted for club chairman Paul Scally to resign, in the wake of their relegation to League 2.

Kent Police have been contacted for more information.
