Giant mural celebrates Lioness' epic penalty

A 2774 square-foot mural has been unveiled for Manchester’s own football star Chloe Kelly. The mural is to also recognise the Lioness who scored the most powerful penalty recorded, including any shot recorded in the top England men’s football tournament in 2022/23.

The mural has been unveiled by Doritos, for their new campaign ‘For the Bold in Everyone’ and aims to ‘crunch’ societal stereotypes in sport and beyond. Doritos research found that 23% of the UK want women athletes to be celebrated more, as there are 40 statues of sportspeople currently in the UK but only three recognise women.

A further study by the brand found that fewer than one in six adults believed that Chloe’s record kick was set by a woman. There has been a lot of progress made for female footballers, yet they still don't get the same recognition as their male counterparts.

With this lack of recognition, the mural also encourages people to think about their own biases and challenge different stereotypes, just like Chloe does on the pitch. Doritos has pledged to support inclusive grassroots football clubs around the country for women and girls.

Chloe, 26, was the first to see the mural revealed in the city of Manchester where she lives, and shared: “To have a mural created in my honour and just down the road from the Manchester City training ground is totally surreal.

“Being a woman has never held me back from following my dreams, and that should be the same for every other girl out there. It’s not men’s football or women’s football, it’s just football, and everyone deserves a chance to get out there, enjoy ourselves and pursue our passions, no matter what stereotype is put on us,”
