George Russell recounts physical toll of porpoising

George Russell has said that the porpoising is taking its toll on all the drivers on the grid.

One seemingly unforeseen issue with 2022's new chassis is the extreme vibration - dubbed porpoising - that the car experiences at around 250kph. This has drivers bouncing up and down in the cockpit while trying to guide their racecar.

"When the car is in the right window, and the tyres are in the right window, the car - except for the bouncing - feels really good to drive," said the Mercedes driver, as per crash.net.

"But the bouncing, it really takes your breath away. It's the most extreme I've ever felt it.

"This is the first weekend I've truly been struggling with my back, and almost like chest pains from the severity of the bouncing. It's just what we have to do to go and do the fastest laps.

"I really hope we find a solution, and I hope every team struggling with the bouncing finds a solution because it's not sustainable for the drivers to continue."

Aston Martin's Lance Stroll echoed Russell's sentiments about the urgent need for a solution.

"When it starts porpoising, it's not fun, and the neck is a little sore the next day," said the Canadian.

"But it's just a part of learning about these new cars and understanding how different they are. And I think it's been a surprise for everyone.

"Everyone up and down this pit lane, if they can solve porpoising, they would be very happy – and we're included in that bunch."
