'Genuinely stunned' - Sky Sports man couldn't believe development involving Spurs ace

Sky Sports News reporter and Tottenham Hotspur fan Jamie Weir has expressed his shock after Eric Dier was not included in Gareth Southgate’s latest England squad.

The Three Lions have two games against Hungary and matches versus Germany and Italy in the UEFA Nations League to come over the next few weeks. 27 players were called up to the squad, but despite an impressive campaign for Spurs, Dier was not included.

Writing on Twitter, Weir could not believe the defender was not on the list. He said: “Not much shocks me these days, but genuinely stunned Eric Dier has been omitted from the England squad. Not sure what more he has to do.”

TIF Thoughts on Dier…

This has been one of Dier’s best seasons throughout his career. He has played 35 times in the Premier League, helping Tottenham keep 16 clean sheets and missing only three matches. During those games, Spurs conceded seven times and lost two of them, which underlines his importance to the team under Antonio Conte.

The snub is even more surprising considering Harry Maguire was called up. The Manchester United man has had a torrid campaign as the Red Devils laboured to a sixth-place Premier League finish. However, the former Leicester City centre-back has rarely let Southgate down and, while his club form has wavered, he has looked calm and composed while on international duty.

While £19.8m-valued Dier may be enjoying a renaissance, he has perhaps missed his chance to truly cement himself in Southgate’s plans. England lost on penalties in the Euro 2020 final and comfortably qualified for the World Cup as well – so they are hardly missing Dier at the moment.
