Genk and Servette profiled as Rangers face Belgians aiming to fix broken heart in Champions League showdown
Rangers could be facing a trip to Belgium for the second successive season in their quest to reach the Champions League group stage. And if they do, they'll be hoping it is less nervy than 12 months ago.
The Light Blues have been drawn against either Jupiler Pro League runners-up Genk or Swiss side Servette as Michael Beale looks to lead the Ibrox men into the promised land of the world football's most prestigious prize. Rangers drew Union Saint-Gilloise at the same stage last season and were left with a huge uphill task after a 2-0 defeat away from home in the first leg. But they turned that around on an epic Euro night in Glasgow before beating PSV Eindhoven in the play off.
Now it's the Low Countries again with Genk – where former Rangers boss Alex McLeish had a brief spell in charge and Ianis Hagi signed from – or Servette up in the third qualifying round. Beale will be hoping his new boys can hit the ground running with the first leg at Ibrox on August 8 or 9 and the return away from home on August 15. Who are Genk?
The were formed in 1988 as a result of a merger between KFC Winterslag and Waterschei Thor. Hailing from the city of Genk in the Limburg provence, they have won the Belgian title on four occasions in their history. That could have been five last season as they were involved in an incredible three-way fight for the championship that went down to the final minutes on the last day to leave them broken hearted.
