Gary Neville sends firm Glazers message and Frenkie de Jong warning to Manchester United

Former Manchester United captain Gary Neville believes the club must do more than just sign Frenkie de Jong ahead of next month's transfer deadline to consider it a successful window.

Neville made the admission after watching his former side make a disappointing start to the new Premier League campaign, losing 2-1 to Brighton & Hove Albion at Old Trafford on Sunday. A Pascal Gross double fired the Seagulls into a commanding 2-0 lead by half-time and United couldn't recover despite pulling a goal back.

United suffered from the same problem that plagued them last season, with their midfield options once again not proving good enough. Scott McTominay and Fred started alongside each other in the engine room.

United remain determined to strengthen their midfield ahead of the transfer window closing and remain hopeful of landing top target De Jong from Barcelona. The Reds opened talks with the Spanish giants about signing the Netherlands international almost three months ago, but are yet to make the breakthrough they crave.

But should Erik ten Hag finally get his man, Neville believes United would need more than simply signing De Jong. Neville also believes pressure could soon start to weigh heavy on the club.

"There is a feeling if they get Frenkie de Jong it will be a successful window," Neville told Sky Sports. "It won't be.

"They needed a lot more than De Jong. They might not even get him, although I hope they do as he's an important player for the coach. There will be a bit of panic at the club as the pressure will be big from the media, the fans."
