Gary Neville's Manchester United captaincy warning to Harry Maguire has become reality

Gary Neville's warning about the pressures of the Manchester United captaincy have become a reality for Harry Maguire at Old Trafford.

United's captain has been struggling for game time since the heavy 4-0 defeat at Brentford on the second matchday of the season. Ever since then, Maguire has had to settle for cameo appearances as Erik ten Hag favours Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez.

When Maguire received the honour of captaining the Reds, Neville was quick to send a warning to the central defender. Following the announcement, he tweeted: "Dream come true to be named the Manchester United captain.

"Proud moment and huge honour. Just want to wish Ashley Young all the best at Inter Milan."

The Sky Sports pundit would respond: "Congratulations! The s*** will come thick and fast in the next year or two.

"Stick at it as you are the captain of the biggest club in the world and it will rise and win again." In the seasons that followed, Maguire would have plenty of criticism aimed at him with many pundits claiming that the 29-year-old should be freed from the burden of the captaincy.

Despite being out of the starting line-up currently, Maguire was handed a call-up to Gareth Southgate's England squad. England will travel to Italy and host Germany in the Nations League, the last matches before the start of the winter World Cup in Qatar.
