Gary Neville’s contract trick with Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United revealed

Former Manchester United goalkeeper Ben Foster has revealed Gary Neville's rather unique approach to entering contract negotiations with Sir Alex Ferguson.

Neville graduated from United's academy alongside the likes of David Beckham and Paul Scholes before going on to enjoy success in the Premier League and Champions League. Foster arrived at Old Trafford in 2005 and was a teammate of Neville's before his 2010 departure.

When discussing the contract negotiations he experienced during his time at Old Trafford, Foster revealed that Neville had a different approach to many. He told talkSPORT: "When I was at Manchester United when I was younger, I was up for a new contract and Gary Neville, I actually grabbed him and I'm going for a new contract, I need advice.

"He went 'who's your agent?' and I told him. He went 'well, why do you need an agent?'. I'm 23 years old, I don't want to go in with Sir Alex Ferguson and David Gill and do my own contract. He said 'yeah, but I do my contracts'. You're Gary Neville though, isn't that the most Gary Neville thing you've heard in your whole life?

"But he said 'I will sit in the room with them and say I'm worth this' and he said 'there's no way they can look at me and say you're not worth that' because he can say 'I'm not good enough am I?'.

"So he would do it that kind of way. But yeah, you've got to be a strong individual, you've got to know your stuff if you're going in for contract talks."
