Gary Neville makes Manchester United U-turn in latest swipe at the Glazers

Gary Neville doesn't believe Manchester United will finish in the top five this season, despite predicting they would finish third before the campaign started.

United were on the verge of a third consecutive defeat in all competitions on Saturday before Scott McTominay's late rescue act secured a dramatic three points against Brentford. The win leaves the Reds on 12 points after eight league games.

Depending on how English teams perform in this season's European competitions, as many as five teams could qualify for next season's Champions League via their final league standing. However, even if fifth place does secure a place in the 2024/25 edition of the competition, Neville doesn't think United will qualify.

Asked by Peter Drury on Sky Sports whether he thought United had enough to qualify for next season's Champions League, Neville replied: "I'm saying no for United but they proved me wrong last season after having a very poor start. Obviously yesterday [vs Brentford] I was happy. I felt sorry for Brentford because I like Brentford a lot, but it was huge.

"It's been such a depressing start to the season and by no stretch of the imagination does beating Brentford at home with two goals in the 93rd and 97th minute mean that everything's okay - far from it, it's a mess."

Neville went on to praise McTominay after his match-winning brace from the bench on Saturday, claiming the viral clip of him jogging back into position against Bayern Munich had been blown out of proportion. He added that the Scotland international and his teammates are struggling
