Gary Neville has already sent Manchester United fans warning about judging Erik ten Hag

There is already huge pressure on Erik ten Hag after suffering defeats in both opening games against teams Manchester United are expected to beat.

Some were left concerned by his team selection in Saturday’s 4-0 defeat to Brentford, after choosing a line-up short on height. This was typified when Ben Mee rose above 5ft 9in Lisandro Martinez to nod in the third during one of the club’s worst-ever 45 minutes.

That instance was worrying but the other three goals had nothing to do with aerial abilities, and all were easily preventable. David de Gea’s handling blunder could not be accounted for and his poor decision-making skills when distributing the ball led to the second.

Luke Shaw’s lack of pace for the fourth was alarming, too. Both men were in the side last season - in fact nine of the starting XI against Brentford were United players last term.

Ten Hag has managed to bring in three players so far, but more are clearly needed. Ralf Rangnick’s estimation of needing ten new players looks more accurate with each week that passes.

Following April’s 1-0 loss to Everton last season, Gary Neville argued that Rangnick’s tenure was looking shaky largely because of the effort of players who had been at the club before his arrival.
