Gary Neville admits Manchester United need to sign three forwards in summer transfer window

Gary Neville has called for major improvements in Manchester United’s recruitment policy in order to compete with Manchester City and Liverpool.

United’s business in the transfer market over the last few seasons has been heavily criticised amid the club’s ongoing struggles. It has now been five years since the Reds last won a trophy.

Having finished second last year in the Premier League, they had been expected by many to mount a title challenge following the signings of Cristiano Ronaldo, Raphael Varane and Jadon Sancho in the summer. Instead, they find themselves out of all of the cup competitions, and facing a battle just to finish in the top four.

And as the summer approaches, United face a potentially massive overhaul with a raft of players — including Paul Pogba and Edinson Cavani — set to leave, while Ronaldo’s future looks uncertain. With a new manager set to arrive at the end of the season, it’s set to be a pivotal summer for the club.

“It’s in no doubt Manchester United need a new manager, but they also need to look very hard above that,” Neville told Sky Sports. “You’ve got some smart operators in the clubs that they’re up against.

“(Luis) Diaz was going to Tottenham, he’s then gone to Liverpool. There’s not even been a mention of him going to Manchester United.

“Manchester United are going to lose Cavani at the end of the season, probably going to lose Pogba, they’ve lost Greenwood, Rashford’s out of form, Martial’s gone to Sevilla and will probably go at the end of the season.

“They’re going to need two or three in those positions, and they weren’t even mentioned. You watch that lad (Diaz) in the Carabao Cup final, and I watched him on Saturday at Brighton, and I’m thinking ‘what a player he is’.
