Gary Lineker facing 'immediate BBC axe' just 24 hours before FA Cup final

Gary Lineker is reportedly on the verge of leaving the BBC after a social media post earlier in the week left some staff at the broadcaster feeling 'disgusted'.

The 64-year-old, who had previously announced plans to leave his role as the face of Match of the Day after an impressive 26-year stint, might be leaving the BBC earlier than planned, based on recent developments reported by the i Paper, via the Mirror.

Sources suggest that Lineker's social media activity, specifically sharing a pro-Palestine video which featured what was perceived as an 'anti-Semitic' rat emoji from Palestine Lobby, has rendered his position increasingly precarious.

Details on the specifics of his possible early departure are yet to be confirmed, but it seems the controversy has escalated tensions, with calls mounting for the BBC to respond.

It comes just 24 hours before the BBC will broadcast the FA Cup final. Lineker is due to be on hosting duties for the Crystal Palace vs Manchester City clash at Wembley.

Lineker later apologised in a statement, saying: "On Instagram I reposted material which I have since learned contained offensive references.

"I very much regret these references. I would never knowingly share anything antisemitic. It goes against everything I believe in.

"The post was removed as soon as I became aware of the issue. Whilst I strongly believe in the importance of speaking out on humanitarian issues, including the tragedy unfolding in Gaza, I also know that how we do so matters.

"I take full responsibility for this mistake. That image does not reflect my views. It was an error on my part for which I apologise unreservedly."
