Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer disagree on 'huge surprise' as Kobbie Mainoo decision looms

Gary Lineker has told Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo that he may have an outside chance of making the England squad for the Euros if he chooses to represent the Three Lions.

The 18-year-old is eligible for both England and Ghana but is said to be in no rush to decide on his international future. He has represented England at Under 18 and 19 level and is said to be in line for a call-up to the U21 squad.

Mainoo has caught the eye since breaking into the United first-team squad. He has made 10 Premier League appearances this season, starting the last eight.

The teenager scored his first Premier League goal earlier this month by netting a late winner in the dramatic 4-3 win over Wolves at Molineux. He impressed again on Sunday when United came out as 2-1 winner over top-four rivals Aston Villa.

Speaking on the Rest is Football podcast, Lineker named the United youngster as an outside bet for a player who could be called up by Gareth Southgate for this summer’s European Championships.

“Kobbie Mainoo,” he said. “He’s very young, but boy he’s impressive, he was brilliant at the weekend again, I thought.”

Fellow presenter Alan Shearer isn’t convinced that any new players will get the chance for the tournament. “I think Gareth has his players,” he said. “I’m not sure there’ll be anyone in there that will be a huge surprise.”

He added: “I’m not sure Gareth will because he has the core of his squad. He understands who they are and what they are and what they can do for him so I’m not sure they’ll be any
