Gartcairn boss Mick Dunlop always knew the West of Scotland First Division title race would go right down to the wire, and is delighted to be in the driving seat.

A draw or a win at promoted Benburb this afternoon will guarantee silverware for the Airdrie club. Chasing St Cadoc’s would need Gartcairn to lose while they beat relegated Bonnyton Thistle, and make up a six-goal deficit as it stands.

Dunlop said: “It’s going to go right down to the last game. I knew it was a difficult league so it doesn’t really surprise me. “The boys have been brilliant this season, and the first aim was to get promotion, which we’ve managed to do – but when you’re this close now, and off the back of 13 games unbeaten, with 10 wins and three draws, you want to finish the job. “We are in the driving seat, being three points ahead and with the better goal-difference as well. “If somebody had said this to you in July last year you’d have bit the hand off them. “It’s in our own hands and you wouldn’t swap our position.

We’re looking forward to it, because these days don’t come round very often.” Gartcairn’s latest result was a 4-0 thumping of relegated Cumbernauld United, with Darren Smith bagging a double, but Dunlop said: “To be honest, on the balance of play, it probably wasn’t a 4-0, if I’m being honest. “We deserved to win the game, but maybe 4-0 was a bit harsh.
